Morning Session - Presented by: Sunny Khaira & Rebecca Liu - Hicks Morely LLP
Navigating Employment Law in Covid 19 will provide Legal updates on matters related to COVID 19 including:
  • updated legislation
  • accommodation and refusal to work, government programs around compensation 
  • termination procedures to consider/layoffs - temporary and permanent. 
Afternoon Session - Presented by: Tammy Whelen & Karyn Hand - Canadian Mental Health Association - Peel Dufferin
Building Resiliency in Extraordinary times - will provide:
  • deeper understanding into mental health impacts of change in extraordinary times and strategies to maintain mental well being 
  • working from home - managing work life balance
  • Stress Essentials - recognizing signs and symptoms of stress and effective tools to use
During registration, please consider the donation option. Donated funds collected through this event registration will be equally divided between Indspire and Black Youth Helpline, preferred charities identified by HRPA members in a recent survey.

CANCELLATION POLICY:  ALL cancellations MUST be received in writing, 3 business days in advance of the event, to chaptercancellations@hrpa.ca.  Registration fees are 100% non-refundable after that time. If it is a complimentary event, a $30 no-show fee invoice will be issued to those registrants who do not attend and have not provided the required notice. Cancellation Deadline is Tues. Oct. 20/20.

Speaker bio(s)
Karyn Hand

Karyn is a registered social worker and educator with 30 years of experience in the field of adult mental health and addictions. Karyn offers several perspectives on mental health and addictions as a front-line clinician, manager and someone who lives in recovery. Karyn has a Bachelor of Social Work from Ryerson University, is a Master of Adult Education candidate at Yorkville University, and holds a Certificate in Advanced Health Leadership from the Rotman School of Management. Karyn is a certified Wellness Recovery Action Planning, Compassion Fatigue and Wholistic Crisis Planning facilitator. Karyn’s passion is to educate those who are interested in developing a better understanding of mental illness and addiction. She is a dynamic and engaging facilitator whose goal is to create a world where those living with mental illness and addiction can thrive without stigma. Karyn has presented to small groups, at conferences and at large corporate trainings of several hundred people. Karyn uses every opportunity to foster an environment where people can feel safe while learning. Karyn encourages people to challenge their ideas and values by embracing concepts that may feel uncomfortable yet honor the diverse communities where we live and work.


Sunny Khaira

Sunny Khaira is a labour and employment lawyer in Hicks Morley’s Toronto office. Sunny provides advice and representation to both federally and provincially regulated employers on a wide range of labour and employment issues including; employment standards, employment agreements, separation packages, labour arbitration, labour board proceedings, collective bargaining, health and safety, restrictive covenants, insolvency and restructuring, human rights and accessibility.


Rebecca Liu

Rebecca Liu is a labour and employment lawyer in Hicks Morley’s Toronto office. She represents private and public sector employers in grievance arbitrations, human rights complaints, wrongful dismissal claims, employment standards complaints and employment contract disputes. Rebecca regularly appears before labour arbitrators, the Ontario Labour Relations Board, the Human Rights Tribunal, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Court of Appeal for Ontario and the Federal Court. She also reviews and revises clients’ internal policies, handbooks and workplace contracts and provides practical and strategic advice on a wide range of labour and employment issues.


Tammy Whelan

In her role as Educator at Canadian Mental Health Association Peel, Tammy is focusing her efforts on helping to spread the word about the mental health issues that affect so many Canadians in all walks of life. As a Certified ASIST Trainer (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training), certified safeTALK Trainer, and certified Mental Health First Aid Trainer, Tammy is determined to demystify mental illness and overcome the stigma surrounding it. She understands that awareness is the key to finding solutions – not just for those struggling to live with mental illness, but for the families trying desperately to cope, as well as our society as a whole. With a certification in Facilitation and Teaching Effectiveness and Adult Education, Tammy shares her knowledge and experience as an instructor at Humber College. Her personal experiences have taught Tammy that we each face our own challenges – big or small - every single day. She believes it is through understanding and acceptance that we can build a network of support for those in need.
